Importance Of Women’s Empowerment In The Business World

Even today in many parts of the world, the participation of women in the decision-making process at the business community and national level is negligible. This leaves them without an effective voice to highlight and address the issues that concern them, their societies and families.  For example, in the national parliaments of many countries, the number of seats that women members hold is a mere 22% of the total electorate. This under-representation of women in the political leadership of their respective countries is due to a variety of reasons. These include lack of access to technology, gender discrimination, deep-rooted traditional views about the role of women in society, inadequate means of finance and segregation along ethnic and religious lines. The same holds true in the business world as well.

An Example of Women’s Empowerment in Business

Heather Weber, a prominent CEO and a shining example of women’s empowerment in the field of business, industry and commerce says that it is imperative for women to play a greater role in the political and business leadership of their countries. She explains that one of ways to overcoming the barriers to women’s participation in the decision- making process at the political and socio-economic level is to generate awareness among the public about the benefits of women leaders.  These benefits can have far-reaching consequences and result in better governance at the local and national level, greater economic advantages for their communities and better responsiveness to the needs of citizens. In addition to this, the involvement of such leaders in the business, political and economic process can also contribute to more cooperation among diverse political parties and provide a more sustainable mechanism to resolve conflicts.

Importance of Role Models

She clarifies that in order to assist women in different countries to triumph over traditional cultural and socio-economic obstacles to their empowerment as leaders is to start building their confidence. In this endeavor, role models of women who are presently successful leaders in their local communities and business world and are enthusiastic about sharing their experience can play a critical role. Their success can be an inspiration for other young women and result in bring about positive change in the attitude of the public in their countries towards women’s employment in political and socio-economic level.

Heather Weber goes on to explain that it is important for business companies in various countries to become gateways to empower women to play a more significant role within their communities as leaders. In addition, these companies also enhance their image among the electorate for providing a platform to allow women to become candidates at the grass root levels to represent their organizations. This gives them a greater say in the issues that affect the business in that country in general and members of their community in particular. Even in the higher level of the country’s government, such political candidates can play a pivotal role on focusing attention on achieving the goals of attaining sustainable development for their community and society. This goes a long way in bring about a positive socio-economic change within their country and leads to greater equality.
